Target acquires sites for two new Bay Area stores
By J.K. Dineen, San Francisco Business Times
Target Corp. has acquired sites in Oakland and San Jose and plans to open two new Bay Area stores in 2011.
The Minneapolis-based retailer bought 10 acres in San Jose and a
117,826-square-foot building in Oakland that was formerly home to an
Expo Design Center, Home Depot’s chain of 34 upscale design stores that was shut down in 2009.
The Oakland property is at 1555 40th Street, on the corner of San
Pablo Avenue. Target plans significant improvements on the site.
The San Jose property is on the southeast corner of North First
Street and Highway 237. Target will be part of an office, retail and
hotel development project known as @First, a development that will also
include Brocade's corporate headquarters and a Hotel Sierra. The San Jose Target will be a 138,000-square-foot store. The developer,
Hunter Storm Properties, has now sold 20 acres of the 39-acre project,
10 to Target and 10 to Brocade, a data center company. Brocade has
started construction on a 562,000-square-foot headquarters campus. A
160-room Hotel Sierra is under construction and scheduled to open late
this year.
